hi guys, been lurkin here for a while and decided it was time to talk up a bit more. unfortunately for you lot though i'm looking for help. i have a 2007 883r which has been unusable for 4 1/2 of the past five weeks and is still not working. the bike was spluttering and dying on me randomly, motorway or round town and occasionally not starting afterwards again. now the bugger of a thing wont start at all. its going back to the dealer for the third time on saturday to get this fixed and i'm at the end of my tether. previous explanations of what they have found wrong has been corrosion in the wiring and fuse box and dodgy relays. worth pointing out that they wont give me a loan bike either even though the bike is under warranty.
actually so sick of this i'm thinking of selling and buying something japanese! anyone know of any possible causes for this? or alternatively anyone know what the consumers rights are in this circumstance?
thanks in advance

Sorry to hear the news, but dont give up on it yet.. First area I would check is battery and connections, particularly earthing connections...From battery and to frame and engine... If you have a meter check continuity of earths.. Is battery OK?, has it had a load test?..Mind you I would be suprised with a year old battery failing unless it has not been used and not charged for a long period of time.
When it stops or wont start, do the lights work?.. Does it try to turn over?. or is there nothing at all happening...?.
Good luck with it ... :D

its already had to go in for a replacement battery earlier in the year and all the electrics are online, bugger just wont go or when it does it might not keep going for long lol. had me stranded a couple of times already unfortunantely. nothing at all happens when you hit the start button, as if the kill switch wasn't disengaging

Firstly you may have a job selling a bike which is not starting!:)
I'm no lawyer but you have a fair deal of consumer rights if the bike is still under warranty. Take a look here for a start for the basics.
http://www.which.co.uk/advice/understanding-the-sale-of-goods-act/index.jsp
There are a few hints on your rights, how to complain.... put things in writing for a start if you haven't done so already, sample letters etc and then other recourse you can take.
There's a couple of other sites with similar stuff (a bit more detail) below

Good luck.

......the bike was spluttering and dying on me randomly, motorway or round town .......
Sorry - can't help you BUT....
I have a 2007 883R, hardly used (125 miles on clock now). It splutters and dies when in traffic occasionally, so would be VERY interested in what the problem is with yours, in case mine goes the same way. My old sporty was a 1200cc, 2001 model and it used to give just the right amount of spluttering and dying that you'd expect.!
Think you should put the frighteners on the dealer though by following Dave U's advice.
Hope you get it sorted soon

I hope this helps and if nothing else they may have a word with the dealer. However the contract for the bike is between you and the dealer andthey may refer you back to dealing with them.

Hi Bobbertandsandy,
I had an 883 that would die on me just like it had run out of gas, turned out to be the manifold pressure sensor coming loose. Check the sensor its right in the middle of the two cylinders on top of the intake manifold.
Hope this helps I gave up on mine and swapped to a 1200 and that is as sweet as a nut.
REgards Keith.

Time for a big twin. If you like the sporty summat like the super glide would suit.Don't let the bad experience of one bike put you off the rest.

Totaly agree with Dave U comments, dont let the experience of one bike put you off. I am on my 5th Harley now and would never go back to another make..
As to which bike next?,, 1200 sporty or upgrade to a Dyna?..
I went from an 883 upto a Dyna Lowrider about 9 years ago, and had nae regrets.. :D I'm now on softail... But I miss the old Dyna, as I could throw that round a bit more on the bends...:D

I went from a 1200 custom sportster to a 1450 Dyna Superglide. Never did get over the sporty, so just got an 883R Sporty for the days when I feel like going a little harder into the curves.
But for distance and power, a Dyna is good for me. Why not try one at TITG - they are bound to have one for test rides - or maybe not....???

I wouldn't judge all big twins by the Fat Boy. Different frames, suspension and depending on age engine mounts. (Either hard mount or counterbalanced engine.)
Try out a dyna and see how it feels.
It depends what yer after really. I'd say the main difference I find is the big twin just feels a bit more "relaxed" on long tours. You pays yer money and takes yer choice and all that.

I had a 1200 Sporty (the old non rubber mount engine - and you can feel the difference !) and moved on to a 1450 Dyna Wideglide, which I had for 5 years. Had lots of fun and complete reliability, went down to St Tropez on it and back with absolutely no problems - miss it a bit now but can only ride one Harley at a time ! Got one of the 1584 Fat Boys now and love it but still miss the Dyna, at times. Try some of the test bikes at Aviemore (thats providing Harley actually arrive !!!).
