View Full Version : Hello
Hello
I live near Evanton on the Cromarty Firth and have owned a slightly modified 2007 XL883L for a year. If I had the money, it would be a very modified XL883L! I tend to cruise the roads from Skye to Thurso, mostly at a very leisurely pace, though I have a longing to stray further afield.:)

Aye Aye min fae Aberdeen.
At the moment I'm lucky enough to get paid for driving around the Highlands and there are some great roads. Get yer backside a bit south round about Grantown, Tomintoul, Dufftown etc. Not only great roads but accompanied by the smell of whisky in the air. Sooooperb.!
When you do get some money try the "new cylinders and pistons to make it a 1200" modification!!:D That would help you stray much further afield.;)
Safe riding and get yer ass to Aviemore.
Thanks everyone. I just missed Thunder in the Glen last year but will be having a look this year, don't need a screen for the midges Bill, I just swallow the little buggers! Don't know if this puts my vegetarianism in question though?

Welcome Crow. They're all mad; I'm the sane one, although I'm only saying that because the voices told me to...
We do Skye, Gairloch, Ullapool quite a lot. Wester Ross is the most beautiful place on the planet, which is why God filled it with the worst mdgies on the planet. April and September, because freezing to death is preferable to the death of a million bites...
What does your 883 make of Bealach na Ba? I'm determined to take the Softail over, next time we're up there, having gained terror points on Amulree to Kenmore, and Porlock hill in Zoomerzet...
I've yet to take the bike across to Applecross Banquo, though I've taken guests through Bealach na Ba in winter in the car to put the wind up them. Been down through Torridon to climb Beinn Alligin and back through Loch Carron which was amazing. Will definately do it before the end of summer this year, they're trying to close the pumps there at the moment so I'll have to be carefull on the fuel side!

Thanks El. I've not been in the Rockvilla Hotel yet. It's only about an hour away, but I'll give it a look in next time across. The only guy I've run into(not literally!) with a big white beard in Evanton works for the council, so it may be him? Spookily, we've also got the same birthday 2nd June!! (though I'm a year later) but after being mistaken for my fiances father at the wedding I was at in Windsor at the weekend :o I'm sure you look a lot younger than me! Has this happened to anyone else on the forum? (come on guys I need some moral support!) Hope to see you at Aviemore. :D

No disrespect to Glenmorangie but I think they've done a good job of getting the USA market already. Being from the NE you'll expect me to recommend a Speyside but I'll say try an Islay

Islay malts are OK if you have a warm up session sucking a Fisherman's Friend" ((OOOOOOO matron). Yon Laphroig is just a macho thing to me. It's to see who can pretend they like cough mixture the most.:D
Malts are about the mood your in but Glenfarclas or Linkwood take a bit o beating for anytime malts.

Johnny,
I can highly recommend riding in the US.
I was in Calirornia, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Navada last year for three weeks and can highly recomend the area for riding in. I can clue you in on places to go if you want.Ckeck out the photos on my Bebo site

Also flew my bike over in 2000 where we did 5000 miles and had 5 days at the Sturguis 60th Rally. Again there's some great riding up. Hope to do a 10th anniversary tour in 2010. YEEEHAW

Yup. Missed me by what looks like an hour or so. Eh, I'll get the hang of the time difference soon enough.
Hey DaveU, I checked out your USA pics. Very nice! San Francisco is really cool. You would probably be disappointed with East Texas. All we have are trees. And more trees. And a few more trees. And, did I mention we have trees? :D

Well to be honest if I'm out for serious drinking I wouldn't get drunk on a malt in any case. I'd be straight on The Famous Grouse with large amounts of ice.
Yeah Yeah I know the purists will wince at the ice bit but I'll make a deal with them.....you drink it how you like it and I'll do it my way!:)
I've even been known to drink JD but that needs a fair bit of coke to tame it a bit. I always think Jack Daniels is a bit like our Glenfiddich........ not the best whisky (Fiddich) or Whiskey (JD) but very good marketing.
Yeah San Francisco is a cool place for sure, reminded me of home though with the "cool" air off the sea! I was in Texas in 2000 but can't recall too many trees. Went through Houston, Austin, Abiline and Lubbock. I believe the landscape gets more varied in the north of the state?
Lots of cotton fields and nodding donkies. My friend who organised the tour kept apologising for the scenery but I was in my element, we don't have such areas that are big and flat over here so it was a novelty for me. Mind you the prairies in South Dakota did get a bit tedious after the first 300 miles :D
If you're interested in what we did in 2000 take a look at the link below.
Photos and my reports on the trip will give you this Scotsman's impression of your fine country.

I believe that "technically" speaking, Crow was the one who started it. :D
However, in the "spirit" of good sportsmanship, I'll get back on topic by once again welcoming Crow to the forum and giving him a hearty invite to visit my part of the USA (East Texas, 80 miles east of Dallas, no plains, lots of trees, looks like the deep south of USA, would be happy to see any of y'all on your next visit, but, if you have visited already I would love to see your pics) any time he wants. :D:D:D
Oh, and Hey RamDez! Sup?
I like Trees :D:D:D:D
Thanks again for the warm welcome and the braw banter though I have to admit I can't drink Malt Whisky and only drink Jack Daniels and Jim Beam with Coke:eek:(I'll get Tarred and Feathered if I admit that round here!) :o

Islay malts are the nectar of the Gods - Caol Isla in particular, Bruichladdich and Bunnahabain running a close second.
Speyside malts - man thats the stuff the cowboys sold to the indians to wipe on their horses ars**
Does make good drain cleaner though

:off topic: just to let any Cumpy Grunts know that I know......:)
Of course the other side of the story is that as whisky made it's way out of Ireland northwards some of the local northern boys thought it was "nae bad" but could be improved upon if it could be made with water that didn't look and taste like it had run off a pile of sheep infested peat bogs.......:D
and so it came to pass they found a river that flowed out of the granite and a such a speed it picked up not a jot of any bad stuff around. It was called the river Spey!!!
BTW you misssed out Lagavulin which is widely acknowledge as a bench mark:D
As for me..... Famous Grouse is my "cooking whisky"
yeah yeah I know that it's springs and burns that get used for whisky making and not the Spey but it's poetic licence ok.....;)
