Hi Folks, after years of riding my BMW Tourer and after seeing my mates new Sportster I have decided to take the plunge and get myself a Harley before I am too old to enjoy it,I have had a look at some of the bikes in dealers and am torn between a 1200 Sportster and a Dyna Glide, any advise guy,s would be appreciated.

Oooo..... A difficult one there mate.

I cried all the way to the dealers the day I rode my Sportster there to trade it in...........:o

....and on the way home I stopped in a layby to phone all my friends and tell them how good my new Dyna Superglide was....................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:p

Only thing I can say is that if you like to ride hard into bends then the Sporty is the way to go, and if you need that little bit more comfort but still like to go fairly hard  (as I do) then go for the Dyna.

Whatever you get mate - you're gonna enjoy it.

Welcome along bud, hard decision you've got there only you can really decide what suits you. Best to get long test ride on both as you could make a costly mistake-l did - s'pose the dyna would be better if you plan to do some travelling to rally's etc as sporty will have smaller fuel tank meaning more stops and prob dyna would be more comfier.

Is it the 1200R you are thinking about?

I had the 883R. Loved it, handled really well, stopped really well but ultimately it was too small a bike for me. Guys are right about the petrol tank it's a bit of a pain on long trips.

So went and got myself, well currently somewhere on the Atlantic Ocean, a Fat Bob so have gone down the Dyna route.

Good luck with whatever you decide to get.Be warned they're addictive!!

Thanks for the advice guys,I was leaning more to the 1200 Custom with the bigger fuel tank,my mate had a 883 with the small tank and it was a bit of a pain if you were riding out on the sticks. You are right though I should go for a decent run in both too see what suits, hope to catch up with you all sometime at a rideout or rally.

Tricky one. I had a sporty but "upgraded" to a wide glide. With the rubber mount engine now the vibration issue is probably no longer a problem.

I think the glide will sit lower if you have height probs, plus to me it "feels" a much bigger bike, more like your in it than on it.

I know LOTS of guys who started with a sporty but changed to a "big twin" soon after. I don't know anyone who has gone back to a sporty after that. That might tell you something.

Hey there Big Stu - know what to do !!! Get the 1200 R and drop on a custom tank then u got the best of everything, range, performance, handling and stopping power.
Mandy has got a 1200R and loves it to bits even with her small peanut tank - she wouldn't change it for the world. We put on a suspension kit to drop it down a bit for her short legs and she thinks it's the biz. I've got a Nightrain and battle to keep up with her when she gets the bit between her teeth - that R has wicked acceleration and cornering in the tight an' twisty bits.
Good advice from the other guys though - ride em both and then decide ................... and that's the toughest part : good luck and let us know what the decision was !!

Either would be a good choice as they are both "Milwaukee Iron". We have a chapter meeting at the Lea Park Hotel in Grangemouth on Sunday 6th if that's your "cup o' tea." If not we will no doubt meet at some point out on the road...... Welcome to the family anyway.
