Hi there Jeff, just been through the same pain myself when I shipped our bikes in from South Africa. Basically your bike has to conform to two main parameters, #1 the speedo has to read in MPH (which I presume u r's does if it's coming from the states) and #2 Your headlight will have to dip to the left (the opposite of what u r's is doing now.) Once those two are in place, you can get your local garage to give you a letter to that effect on their letterhead which you will need for the process of getting it registered which is as follows :
#1 Insure the bike - there are quite a few guys who will do it on the VIN number before you actually get it registered which is handy.
#2 Get hold of Heidi Buck @ Harley Davidson down in good ol' England and ask her to send you your Conformity Certificate for the bike - you will have to give her u r VIN number and she will print it out for you. Her number is 01865 719068 ................ she is extremely helpful.
#3 Go onto the VCA website www.vca.gov.org and get the form to apply for British National Type Approval Motorcycles, fill it in, attach the certificates and letters required along with 70 quid and post it off to them.
#4 When you get the form back from VCA take it along with your bike reg doc, HM Customs duty receipt and the DVLA app for reg to your local DVLA, part with another 50 or 60 quid and there you have it.
If you don't want to go the route of the single vehicle approval you can always take it along to your local VOSA test station for certification, but they're gonna chuck it out on the pipes if you're running SE's or V & H's.
Hope this helps - any hassles, please give me a buzz.
Ride Safe and Enjoy.
