When removing the filter, there's always some oil comes out with it, and it's a good idea to direct most of it into your drip tray, especially avoiding the electrical connections and the regulator. The box from the replacement filter can be shaped easily when dismantled, to fit below the filter, and can be shaped as shown, to direct most of the oil away from the important bits, and into the tray.

This is especially useful if you do a partial 'full' (oxymoron) oil change, and try to remove oil from the galleries before refilling. Remove the spark plugs and turn the motor over on the starter until oil stops coming out of the filter mount. This gets rid of more dirty oil than a simple oil change. A full change involves refilling the oil tank, and turning it over until clean oil comes out, but that's a bit extreme for me... Some people even do that with the engine running, and that's FAR too extreme for me...:eek::eek:
