When removing the filter, there's always some oil comes out with it, and it's a good idea to direct most of it into your drip tray, especially avoiding the electrical connections and the regulator. The box from the replacement filter can be shaped easily when dismantled, to fit below the filter, and can be shaped as shown, to direct most of the oil away from the important bits, and into the tray.

This is especially useful if you do a partial 'full' (oxymoron) oil change, and try to remove oil from the galleries before refilling. Remove the spark plugs and turn the motor over on the starter until oil stops coming out of the filter mount. This gets rid of more dirty oil than a simple oil change. A full change involves refilling the oil tank, and turning it over until clean oil comes out, but that's a bit extreme for me... Some people even do that with the engine running, and that's FAR too extreme for me...:eek::eek:

Hi Mike, Every 5000, as recommended, and also before winter layover, so that's about twice per year. Don't like leaving it overwintering with dirty oil, but I've never seen the point in replacing oil more frequently than every 5k. If I lived in Arizona, or somewhere else that gets very hot maybe, or if I did a lot of town driving or short journeys where it doesn't warm up, and gets very contaminated with fuel, etc., maybe, but the kind of use it gets suggests the 5k interval (which is pretty short after all) should be OK.
Might be more concerned about an '07 too, as they run so weak that oil overheating might be a problem, and break down earlier.
One thing's for sure, you're not going to do it any harm by changing more frequently... ;-)

Why do we alway overlook the simple obvious solutions. Thanks for this kick up the backside.

Nice tip, I had read about this, but could not actually see how to do it in my mind. No good at origami. What do they say, a picture paints a thousand words.
