Me and a mate want to do the Iron Butt 1000 in 2009, but this lies in the middle of our family holiday . Looks like we'll have to do it for another cause. :(

Thought about doing route B. Only thing stopping me is I would like to start at Edinburgh do all the check points and finish in Edinburgh. Is there anyway this can be done?

If you go to the Iron Butt UK homepage, and click on forum link, there is a bit of discussion on it there.. I think (dont quote me) they want a common point start to make verification of mileometers etc simpler, and start times are verified for the attempt???...

http://www.ironbuttuk.org/index.html

IBA Forum may give you some answers????...:)

I would give it a go, but only if we could start off from Edinburgh or Glasgow. I did 1034-miles in just over 20-hours last year from this side of Mont Blanc to Lanarkshire via Central London (to ensure the 1000-mile mark would be broken) last May including the Chunnel journey. By the time you reach the 1000-mile mark, you just want to get off the bike and stay off for more than a couple of days . So (from personal experience) I think the journey home from the planned finish point would be a most un-enjoyable experience and ruin any satisfaction to be gained from completing the event. I had purchased a new Mustang touring seat which did a fantastic job, no sore butt however; the overall journey was exhausting (maybe a little to do with my overall fitness, or lack of perhaps) It's a great idea and a great cause, I just thought I'd share my 1000 + mile experience with you all.:)

Have to agree with DavidF the ride home will not be pleasant a 1,000 miles is a bit of a barrier.
I can't see why you could not start at say EHD and the rest of the journey could be done with timed dated petrol receipts most Filling stations have a facility that they can put your Reg No on till receipt.

Brief report of the weekend,
I traveled upto Squires Cafe on the friday, arriving just before 12 noon, car park was full of bikes, but after a while I realised these were mainly local riders out for a blast and stopped for tea and coffee, by mid afternoon, more riders started to arrive for the event. I set up camp behind the pub, out of the wind.. and within in collapsing distance from the bar..
Riders briefing was at 8pm, done by Paddy from the RBLR (organiser of the event) and Roger from the Iron Butt UK.. If you meet anyone who did the ride, ask them about the chorus to the song that was sung on the evening. :D:D:D:D
Spent the evening catching up with old friends and making new friends, keeping the beer to the minimum...
Saturday morning up early, queue was starting to form on the carpark, marshals had their briefing on formalities at 7.30, then gates opened at 8am, I got away at 8.06am... I chose anti clockwise route, north... So first stop was Berwick on Tweed, Fuel receipt with date and time stamp duly aquired. Uneventful journey. one stop at roadside cafe for full breakfast. Next part of journey was Edinburgh bypass, upto Dreghorn services.. Next was the best bit of the journey up to Wick... What great roads... From Wick, it was down to Fort William (half hour break here).. Again uneventful a few odd light showers.
From Fort William down to Birch services, in the darkness now, over the glens, was interesting, had to brake hard only once to avoid the deer, so I slowed down at this point and changed my undepants :rolleyes: ..
The last stretch before Glasgow, they had been planing the road surface on the twisties and there was no warning sign, and nearly caught me and a few others out... The run down the M74 and M6 was long and tedious, but meant I could get some quick miles out of the way.. Then after Birch services, it was only a matter of 50 miles back to Squires and book back in at 6.42 am on sunday.. I tended to take 20 minute breaks at every fuel stop.
I then hung around watching other riders arriving.. Had a few cups of tea and bacon butties, was debating riding back home that afternoon after the debrief, but got coerced into a beer or two... So, had to stop another night, riders debrief was at 4pm, had a meal and a beer or two or three, ??? ha ha... dont know what time I went to bed:confused::confused::confused: ha ha...
Up next morning, tea and breakfast, all packed and left for home at 10am...

Stats I have heard from the ride are:-
187 started the ride
DNF= 21
as follows.
11 overtime
1 ill
6 mechanical failures
2 punctures
1 minor collision

All in all a GREAT success... and a new rest of the world world record has been set out side of the USA.. Even had a lady complete it on a scooter..
Respect to her...

Will I do it again, ???

You bet I will............ :D:D

what time did you leave Fort William?

Not sure, just checked my camera I took photo at Esso services at 22.45, so probably about 22.55 on saturday..

I'll post a few piccies later, sadly most are of service stations as these were the only places I stopped, apart from the Commando memorial..
